Art & Science at ISTA

Artists & designers in collaboration with researchers

Basic research inspires – not only further science and technology and their application, but also other disciplines. In an exchange between artists and designers and researchers, works are created at the interface of art and science. This not only creates works of art, but also new questions, ideas, exciting stories and perspectives that inspire science and society.

Science and art help us to understand the world – there is immense potential in the dialog between the two disciplines.

Our approach

From hands-on objects that can be used to explain scientific phenomena to more complex topics relating to new technologies and scientific findings: Through exchange and collaborations with ISTA researchers, creatives and cultural institutions, the curators of the VISTA exhibition team create new access points to science for all age groups.

Artist Residency

Roots and Trajectories by Shailesh BR & Daniela Brill Estrada

During the three months, the artists Daniela Brill Estrada (COL) and Shailesh BR (IND) had the opportunity to exchange ideas with various researchers at ISTA and gain comprehensive insights into laboratories and research projects.

Walking on Rolling Stones

At ISTA, a team led by Francesca Pellicciotti is researching glaciers that appear to be holding their own against global warming. Is this a sign of hope? The exhibition combines science and art - with works by Céline Ducret, Martin Heynen and Patrick Hari - and invites us to explore our feelings in times of uncertainty.
Artist Residency

Immortal Motors & Celestial Bodies by Max Prüfer & Julia Carrillo

Her exhibition shows a selection of artworks that have emerged from these encounters - fascinating narratives that range from nanofabricated “insects” to delicate prints of starlight spectra.

From a tongue we are losing

What does a print of the chemical composition of water look like? For her photo project From a Tongue We Are Losing, artist Laure Winants accompanied a team of multidisciplinary researchers on a four-month expedition to the Arctic. A ship took them into the ice, into a vast white desert in which humans make up only a tiny part of the world.
