What does a print of the chemical composition of water look like? For her photo project From a Tongue We Are Losing, artist Laure Winants accompanied a team of multidisciplinary researchers on a four-month expedition to the Arctic. A ship took them into the ice, into a vast white desert in which humans make up only a tiny part of the world.
In this extreme landscape, Laure Winants has developed special techniques to capture the unique light phenomena of the Arctic and make the changes in this region visible.
In her experimental series Time Capsule, Winants explores the interplay of light and color in the Arctic. She creates photograms by placing shapes cut from ice onto light-sensitive surfaces. As the ice melts, it reveals the fine structure of the crystals and at the same time casts shadows on elements that have existed for millions of years.
By making scientific data tangible and emotionally tangible, she shows the close interconnectedness of ecosystems and explores time periods that go beyond human understanding. With this method, Laure Winants builds a bridge between art, science and technology.
