About the Project

Ask the Science Granny! is an initiative that encourages women aged 60 and above to explore their curiosity for science and share their knowledge with younger generations. Our goal is to promote interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects and overcome stereotypical roles.

Here, Science Grannies not only create and experience "Aha" moments but also become role models themselves, demonstrating that knowledge knows no age boundaries. Whether in exciting workshops in the lab, during exchanges with researchers at regular meet-ups, or later in shaping the project's future – the principle here is: Research connects, excites, and enriches across generations.

Who are the Science Grannies?

Any woman around the age of 60 or older can become a Science Granny, regardless of having grandchildren or not. No educational or scientific career background is required. What matters most are your life experience, curiosity, and the joy of learning and discovering with children?

Monthly get-togethers

At monthly Science Grandma get-togethers, you can gain exciting insights behind the scenes of research. Meet ISTA scientists and dive into current scientific topics with us. The get-togethers will also continue to serve as an open platform for exchange and co-creation for active and interested Science Grandmas. In a co-creative setting, we want to develop ideas and shape the future of the project, e.g., on the following topics: establishing the Science Grandma Association, developing new workshop formats, training new Science Grandmas, implementation in other federal states and internationally, financing models, partner institutions, networking, and much more!

What has happened so far in 2025 – The project in figures

  • In 2025, eight employed Science Grandmas have enthusiastically led around 70 research workshops in Horten, inspiring over 600 children with experiments.

  • Twelve intergenerational workshops on exciting topics have taken place at the ISTA Campus.

  • Public visibility: Through a lot of positive media coverage and a presence on social media, we are showing that older women can also understand and communicate science.

Event Venue

Our activities take place at the ISTA Campus in Klosterneuburg.
