Science as a Collaborative Process

“Science in the Making – How Is Tomorrow’s Knowledge Created?” invites you not only to discover answers, but also to ask questions yourself. The exhibition offers new perspectives on the role of science in our daily lives and society, as well as on the interplay between research, technology, art, and design. It shows that knowledge is not created in isolation. It emerges through exchange, experimentation, and dialogue.

Program Highlights

Long Night of Research

Curious about how scientists explore the world around us? Join us on April 24 from 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM for an evening full of discoveries as part of the Long Night of Research. At 14 interactive stations, you can experience hands-on experiments, short talks, and exciting demonstrations.

Meet the Scientist

As part of the Long Night of Research, “Meet the Scientist” gives you the chance to meet ISTA researchers in person. You’ll gain fascinating insights into structural biology, quantum physics, and cloud research.

Encounters in the Milky Way

Starting now, the auditorium of the VISTA Science Experience Center will be transformed into a special cinema. In collaboration with the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), the short film “Encounters in the Milky Way” will be shown in Austria for the first time.

QR codes and their magical properties!

QR codes can be found everywhere, from restaurants to shops to museums. They allow information to be exchanged quickly and easily. Discover the fascinating world behind these little squares in this experiment.

    World Day for Glaciers

Glaciers are rapidly melting, a warning sign of the impact of climate change. On the occasion of the first World Day for Glaciers, we spoke with ISTA Professor Francesca Pellicciotti. She uses models to study the interactions of the changing climate, glaciers, snow, and water resources.

  • Eine Frau mit von einem schwarzen Band bedeckten Augen hält einen verzierten Ständer mit einem Smartphone vor einem gelben Hintergrund.

    #STEMLooksLikeMe

Discover creative teaching ideas with STEMlooksLikeMe that make STEM subjects accessible to everyone. Our inclusive resources help you inspire students and spark their passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

  • Ask the Science Grandma!

In intergenerational workshops, women aged 60 and above and children between the ages of 7 and 12 are encouraged to explore science and its processes together. Through shared learning and discovery, the “Science Grandmas” serve as role models with their life experience, curiosity, and enthusiasm.

  • Eine Frau in einem Gewächshauslabor unter pinkem LED-Licht untersucht und pflegt Pflanzenreihen, die in Töpfen mit Stäben befestigt wachsen.

    Gardening for science

In one of the basement rooms of the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA), mutants are growing. But instead of monsters, they are small plants that serve as living subjects for science.

Embedded within the research campus of the Institute of Science and Technology Austria, the building invites direct dialogue with science. Open, light-filled spaces and a strikingly curved roof symbolize the dynamism and openness of cutting-edge research in the 21st century. In its 9.000 roof tiles, the vibrant atmosphere of the campus is reflected, while the VISTA Coffee Lab invites visitors to engage in conversation, exchange ideas, or simply relax.
